Brewing Basics: How to Make the Perfect French Press

(Because good coffee deserves more than a sad drip machine.)

At Sip Happens Coffee Works, we believe everyone should know how to brew a killer cup of coffee at home. The French press is one of our favorites! It’s simple, stylish, and brings out bold, full-bodied flavors. Whether you’re a total newbie or just looking to perfect your press game, here’s how to make coffee that’ll have you saying, “Dang, I did that.”

What You’ll Need

  • A French press (any size works)

  • Freshly ground Sip Happens coffee (coarse grind is key!)

  • Hot water (just off the boil, around 200°F)

  • Spoon or stir stick

  • Timer

  • Your favorite mug

Step-by-Step Brewing Guide

1. Measure & Grind
Use 2 tablespoons of coffee for every 6 oz of water. Grind it coarsely—think breadcrumbs, not powder. Too fine and you’ll end up with sludge.

2. Heat the Water
Boil water, then let it sit for 30 seconds to cool slightly. The sweet spot is about 200°F.

3. Add Coffee & Water
Put your coffee grounds in the press, then pour in hot water. Stir gently to make sure all the grounds get soaked.

4. Steep & Wait
Place the lid on with the plunger pulled up. Let the coffee steep for 4 minutes (set a timer so you don’t cheat).

5. Press & Pour
Slowly push the plunger down, steady and even. Pour into your mug right away so it doesn’t over-brew.

Sip Happens Tips

  • Upgrade the flavor: Use filtered water, bad water = bad coffee.

  • Play with ratios: Like it stronger? Add more grounds. Lighter? Ease back a spoonful.

  • Don’t let it sit: French press coffee gets bitter if left in the pot. Pour it out and enjoy.

Brew bold, sip slow, and press on.
